Hello New Friend!

Hi hello & assalamualaikum,

Today, we eagerly want to introduce to our new friend from Afghanistan. Wait, before that let us share how we met him and how did we know him hihi

We can't really remember the exact time when was that but basically, on that day, Weeya and I (Hana) wanted to go home after the class, so we went to LRT Gombak to reach to our destination. Suddenly, there's one guy asking us for direction and uncoincidentally we wanted to go to the same place. As we wanted to go to the same place, we asked him to just follow us.

In the train, we had a chit chat and click! We became friends and still keep in touch with each other until today. Later, we set an appointment to have a leisure talk and ask about him, his culture and so on.

Before that, let's start with his biodata,
:103::103::103::103::103::103::103::103:
:103::103::103::103::103::103::103::103:

Name: Muhammad Saleem :97:
Age: 22 years old
From: Afghanistan
How long he has been in Malaysia: 3 years and 3 months
Course: Kuliyyah of ICT
Nationality: Persian

We asked him lots of lots of questions. One of the questions was, if he knows about stereotype. The first response we got, he was quite not understand what is stereotype . Maybe, he rarely heard of the "stereotype" word. But it is okay, we have explained the rough meaning of stereotype :face64:. He has the stereotype that all Malaysians are friendly (thumbs up us Malaysians!  ) and the food in Malaysia mostly has too much spices and he doesn't like them a lil bit yet he try to like and adapt with Malaysian food (that's good) . Among Malaysian food that he like most is Nasi Ayam and Nasi Ayam Kunyit. Especially, the sambal and Ayam Kunyit . Other than that, we also asked if he has any negative perception towards Malaysian people. He told us that everything is fine about Malaysia, but he has a negative perception(?) about IIUM rules . He said that he doesn't know, but somehow he thinks that one of IIUM rules is illogical, which is the dress code. He wondered why wearing a V-neck t-shirt is not allowed during classes as he thinks it is a proper attire. Maybe it is quite weird for them to have a specific dress code to wear whereas in their country they are free to wear any proper clothing. However, he still follows the rules emoticon26

Besides, we also asked him about the cultures in his country. In Afghanistan, there are a lot of ethnic groups; Pashtun, Tajik, Hazara, Uzbek and so on. He is from Tajik ethnic group, which is known as Persian people. Same like races in Malaysia, people can differentiate the ethnic groups in Afghanistan from their faces, names and languages. It must be exciting if we get to go there and learn every ethnic groups they have in Afghanistan. We've got a lot more to tell you guys about our new friend, we will post it out in our next entry.

Sum up, he's a good person and know how to fit in with people from another country :)

S-T-E-R-E-O-T-Y-P-E-S

Hello and Assalamualaikum peeps!
Hi, I'm Hana. Weeya is going to share her stereotype in our next entry.
Let me share mine first hihihi.

I know I have chosen to share something very sensitive. But that's the only thing that comes to my mind at this moment. I have a big issue on Mamak. Wait, I'm not racist nor hate them. Never ever. Don't get me wrong. I have a lot of Mamak friends and I surely love them! So yeah to be more specific, eating at Mamak restaurant. I know eating at Mamak restaurant has become a trend in our Malay society. We accept Mamak as part of ours. Yes, I never denied that Mamak are also Muslim and they already mix the blood with Malay but for some reason, I have stop eating at their restaurant.

I once was a Mamak food lover. Ohhh I love their roti canai, nasi kandar and their ayam tandoori. Marvellous! Unfortunately, I saw something that absolutely change my perception towards them. To the extent where I will never see them as the people I used to accept in my culture anymore. What is that? Ehem I'm not going to tell about it like very detail. No, let's just keep it as a secret haha I just want to share my stereotype towards them on cleanliness. Hygiene. For me, Mamak are taking cleanliness for granted. They did not take cleanliness as important as it is. And years ago, there was a video went viral, it's about an Indian Mamak who was flipping roti canai and his sweats was like raining around the roti canai. Oh no, can you feel me? Can you?? Wait wait, it's not only Mamak, if I saw an exact situation where Malay was in the video like that I know I will puke and lost my appetite straight away. But this case, because the person in that video was Mamak and everything has changed, I am not going to eat at Mamak restaurant anymore. Frankly speaking, I miss Mamak food, their food is superb delicious I tell you. If there is a Mamak restaurant that get labelled A for their cleanliness, I promise I will eat there everyday :)

So that's all from me, thank you for reading!
Toodles.

WHO AM I?

I am a daughter,
I'm proud of being my parents' daughter,
I can't imagined my life without them,
They are my everything,
I won't ever trade my parents for the world,
My parents are my bestfriends,
My father is my happiness, my mother is my strength.
Without them, I don't think I can still living like who I am today,
I don't mind not having best friends as long as I have my parents by my side.
They know me like no other,
They know me just like the back of their hands.
They know my flaws, they know my weakness, but they still love me,
And accept me for who I am,
They know how to handle me well, they always encouraging me.
I feel blessed and grateful because I still have mom and dad.
I am so lucky for these endless blessings I have right now. Thanks God!

Cultural Diversity

Assalamualaikum everyone! How are you doing? Hope you are doing fine

So, before we start, we would like you to play this, a very very worthwhile and captivating video entitled Cross Cultural Communication by Pellegrino Riccardi. Just hit the play button below

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Today, we would like to share with you, our understanding about what culture is and the dissimilarities between cultures after watching the above video on TEDx Talks YouTube channel. Speaking of which, the speaker, Pellegrino has the credibility to talk about cultures because he has been to many countries. He has experienced a lot during his journey. According to him,
Culture is a system of behaviour that helps us act in an accepted or familiar way.
These two keywords; acceptance and familiarity brought us to a clearer definition of culture.

The same act, doesn't mean the same in different cultures.
Living in a community or society makes communication very important. We communicate everyday, even to ourselves (monologues). Communication does not only exist when two persons are talking, but, body language is also included as a method of communication. There are some body languages we used to express something and not all cultures could interpret them the same as what you think.  Let us give you an example, in Malaysia, when we meet someone we know, we would raise our hand as a token of greeting  or expressing our gratitude. Yet, you might not know that in Africa, on the other hand, the act of raising hand (which is, palm towards them) is you are being rude . This fact was told by our previous lecturer who is from Africa. Why? Because raising hand to greet someone is a behaviour that is accepted by Malaysians and it is familiar as everyone is doing the same. However, in Africa, they are not familiar with that behaviour and is not accepted by their culture. Hence, we need to be more careful of doing things during travel, respect them and learn the dos and dont's before travelling .

"We are all doing the same thing in slightly different way."
We found this quote interesting because the example given by Pellergrino about queuing in some countries are different, is unique for us which makes us want to learn about other cultures more eagerly  We love they way how they queue in Finland, Norway and Cambodia because they way they queue is different from others. From what we have learnt in Semantics class image, we were told that when we ask someone from different cultures to describe one word, sometimes will have a lot of different meanings. And, one of the examples is, "queuing". The general meaning of queuing is a line or sequence of people awaiting their turn to be attended to or to proceed. Everyone knows the meaning of queue, but the way they do it are distinguished from others. This is different cultures queue.

From this visual, we can see how they interpret how "queuing"is. Looking at the way the Cambodians are queuing, we have always wanted to do something like that (lazy huh?). Hahaha, no, it's not like that! This is because, the way they queue makes us to be more patient and relax rather than stand still for a bit long until our turn has arrived. For us, by looking at the above figure, we can see that this variety makes this world looks more attractive as being the same like others is boring .

That's all from us. We are glad if you can give your comment and opinion also regarding this topic. Toodles!

People often don't mean what they say and don't say what they mean

According to Scollon, "When people communicate they often don't say what they mean and don't mean what they say"

The quote above is very related with Malay cultures. Since we were young our parents taught us to never accept anything from anyone. We mean in a good way, ahha. For example when we were small we followed our mother to their friend's house, they are going to offer drinks  to their guests. And as a guest, when they offered our mother a drink, our mother will refuse it in the first place. And when they insisted to still get a drink for us, by then our mother will accept the offer.  So can you relate with the quote

Basically in Malay cultures, we are not going to ask for a drink when we go to someone's house even that time we are very thirsty. This is because of the culture we were born in. Interesting isn't it?  In western culture, if they offer us something and we refuse to take it. They won't asking it again but different with Malay culture, when someone offers us something, we refuse to accept it, they will keep asking it over again until we say yes. We know this is a politeness we have to show to the people. Thus, for us when people communicate they often don't say what they mean and don't mean what they say has positive and negative side. But from the example we gave, We think that's positive act. Heee we love our culture

Thank you.

Assalamualaikum and hi :)

Before we start posting a lot of relax and interesting entries, we would like to introduce to you about the authors first. This blog owns by Rabi'atul'Adawiyah (Weeya) & Nurul Farhanah (Hana) . Both of us are from different cultures, Weeya is from Sabak Bernam and Hana is from Kuala Terengganu. Majority people in Sabak Bernam, love and used to eat spicy food. The more the taste of spicy is, the more delicious the food will be. The most famous food in Sabak Bernam is Mee Udang! There are a lot of people from many states come to Sabak Bernam to taste the delightful taste of Mee Udang regardless of the distance.  Besides, the culture in Kuala Terengganu is not much different with other culture. What we love about Terengganu culture is the nature, because there are a lot of beaches. That's how we grown up living in nature, we will go to the beach in the evening and spend most of the time at the beach. And other than that, we have a lot of food like nasi dagang. It is very delicious!

The purpose of this blog is to discover and study about cultures. As we all know, this world does not only have one culture. No, there are various number of cultures.
